মানবসেবায় তিন দশকের অবদান: ‘ফ্রিডম অব দ্য সিটি অব লন্ডন’ সম্মাননা পেলেন সাব্বির করিম

দীর্ঘ ৩১ বছর ধরে মানবকল্যাণ ও দাতব্য কর্মকাণ্ডে অবদানের স্বীকৃতিতে ঐতিহাসিক ‘ফ্রিডম অব দ্য সিটি অব লন্ডন’ সম্মাননা পেয়েছেন ব্রিটিশ বাংলাদেশি সমাজসেবী, উদ্যোক্তা এবং ব্রিটিশ এয়ারওয়েজের সিনিয়র কেবিন ক্রু ও ইনফ্লাইট লিডার সাব্বির করিম। বৃহস্পতিবার, ২২ অক্টোবর লন্ডনের ঐতিহাসিক গিল্ডহলে তাঁকে এই সম্মাননা প্রদান করা হয়।

বাংলাদেশের মৌলভীবাজারের একাটুনা গ্রাম থেকে নয় বছর বয়সে যুক্তরাজ্যে আসা সাব্বির করিমের এই অর্জন তাঁর দীর্ঘ কর্মজীবন ও মানবসেবার যাত্রায় এক স্মরণীয় মাইলফলক। বিমান পরিবহন ও রেস্তোরাঁ ব্যবসায় ব্যস্ত কর্মজীবনের পাশাপাশি তিনি বাংলাদেশ, যুক্তরাজ্য ও কেনিয়ায় সুবিধাবঞ্চিত মানুষের সহায়তায় বিভিন্ন দাতব্য উদ্যোগে যুক্ত রয়েছেন।

তিনি সাব্বির করিম ফাউন্ডেশন এবং এসএন ফ্রি প্রাইমারি হেলথ কেয়ার ট্রাস্টের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও চেয়ারম্যান। ট্রাস্টের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের মৌলভীবাজারে নিয়মিত বিনামূল্যে স্বাস্থ্য পরীক্ষা, চিকিৎসা পরামর্শ ও ওষুধ দেওয়া হয়। এই উদ্যোগে ইতোমধ্যে সাত হাজারের বেশি মানুষ উপকৃত হয়েছেন। তাঁর ফাউন্ডেশন খাদ্যসহায়তা, অসুস্থ ও অসচ্ছল মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়ানো, তরুণদের খেলাধুলায় উৎসাহ দেওয়া এবং প্রয়োজনভিত্তিক এককালীন সহায়তার মাধ্যমে ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ পরিবারগুলোকে স্বাবলম্বিতার পথে এগিয়ে নিতে কাজ করে।

বাংলাদেশের গাজীপুরে অবস্থিত শ্রীপুর ভিলেজের সঙ্গে তাঁর সম্পর্ক প্রায় তিন দশকের। বর্তমানে ট্রাস্টি হিসেবে তিনি অসহায় মা ও শিশুদের নিরাপত্তা, শিক্ষা ও স্বাবলম্বিতা অর্জনের কাজে সহায়তা করছেন। যুক্তরাজ্যে তাঁর মানবিক কর্মকাণ্ডের মধ্যে রয়েছে কোভিড মহামারির সময়ে অসহায় পরিবার, এনএইচএস কর্মী ও সম্মুখসারির সেবাকর্মীদের খাদ্যসহায়তা এবং গ্রেনফেল অগ্নিকাণ্ডে ক্ষতিগ্রস্তদের পাশে দাঁড়ানো। কেনিয়াতেও তিনি সুবিধাবঞ্চিত শিশুদের সহায়তায় দাতব্য কার্যক্রমে অংশ নিয়েছেন।

গিল্ডহলের অনুষ্ঠানের পর কাউন্সিলর মনসুর আলীর আয়োজনে এক সংবর্ধনা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। পরে তাঁর স্ত্রী আনিলা করিম লন্ডনের ব্লুমসবারিতে তাঁদের রেস্তোরাঁ সালাম নামাস্তেতে একটি সারপ্রাইজ celebratory ডিনারের আয়োজন করেন। পরিবার, বন্ধু ও শুভানুধ্যায়ীদের উপস্থিতিতে আনন্দঘন পরিবেশে এই অর্জন উদ্‌যাপন করা হয়।

দিনের আয়োজনে উপস্থিত ছিলেন লন্ডন অ্যাসেম্বলি সদস্য অ্যান ক্লার্ক, প্রফেসর টম সেলউইন, ডা. জাকির খান, বাংলাদেশ সেন্টারের সেক্রেটারি তফজ্জুল মিয়া, সিনিয়র ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান দেলোয়ার হোসেন, সিনিয়র সংবাদ উপস্থাপক ডা. জাকি রেজওয়ানা আনোয়ার, টাওয়ার হ্যামলেটসের সাবেক স্পিকার আহবাব হোসেন, খালিস উদ্দিন, জালাল আহমদ, শেরওয়ান চৌধুরী ও ডা. শাহনূর খান। ,ড. রফিকুল হায়দার,ফারুক মিয়া, ,আবদুল বাসির ভাই,আজাদ হোসেন —,মো. পারভেজ কুরেশী —

এই অর্জনকে জীবনের এক গভীর আবেগময় মুহূর্ত হিসেবে বর্ণনা করে সাব্বির করিম তাঁর পরিবার, সহকর্মী, স্বেচ্ছাসেবক ও শুভানুধ্যায়ীদের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা জানান। মানুষের পাশে থাকার অঙ্গীকার নিয়েই তিনি তাঁর মানবিক কাজ এগিয়ে নিতে চান।

Philanthropist Sabbir Karim Receives Freedom of the City of London Following Three Decades of Humanitarian Service

London, 25 October 2026: British Bangladeshi philanthropist, entrepreneur and British Airways Inflight Leader Sabbir Karim has received the Freedom of the City of London, marking 31 years of charitable and humanitarian service. The ceremony took place at the historic Guildhall on Thursday, 22 October.

For Karim, who arrived in Britain aged nine from Ekatuna village in Bangladesh’s Maulvibazar district, the occasion marked a significant milestone in a life shaped by work, family and service to others.

Alongside his career with British Airways and his restaurant businesses—Salaam Namaste, Namaaste Kitchen and Namaaste Highgate—Karim has supported charitable initiatives in Bangladesh, the United Kingdom and Kenya.

He is the founder and chairman of the Sabbir Karim Foundation and the SN Free Primary Health Care Trust. Through regular free medical camps in Maulvibazar, the Trust provides health checks, medical advice and medicines to people who might otherwise struggle to access care. More than 7,000 people have benefited from the initiative.

His foundation also supports families facing hardship through food assistance, help for people affected by serious illness, youth sports sponsorship and targeted, one-off interventions intended to help vulnerable households move towards greater independence.

Karim’s association with Sreepur Village in Bangladesh began nearly three decades ago, following a visit as a member of cabin crew. He now serves as a trustee, supporting its work to provide vulnerable mothers and children with safety, education and opportunities to build independent lives.

In the UK, his charitable work has included providing food and assistance to vulnerable families, NHS staff and frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as supporting people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. His overseas humanitarian involvement has also included charitable activities supporting disadvantaged children in Kenya.

Following the Guildhall ceremony, a reception was hosted by Councillor Mansur Ali. Karim’s wife, Aneela Karim, later organised a surprise celebratory dinner at their restaurant, Salaam Namaste, in Bloomsbury, bringing together family, friends and well-wishers to mark the occasion.

Those attending the day’s celebrations included London Assembly Member Anne Clarke; Professor Tom Selwyn; Dr Zakir Khan; Bangladesh Centre Secretary Tofazzul Miah and Senior Vice-Chairman Delwar Hossain; senior news presenter Dr Zaki Rezwana Anwar; former Tower Hamlets Speaker Ahbab Hossain; Khalis Uddin; Jalal Ahmad; Sherwan Chowdhury; and Dr Shahnoor Khan. Karim was also joined by his wife, Aneela, and their son, Shahraj Karim.

Reflecting on the occasion, Karim expressed his gratitude to his family, colleagues, volunteers and supporters who have shared his journey. He described the recognition as a deeply personal milestone and an encouragement to continue serving communities at home and abroad.
